cbd can help if you are suffering with pain from auto injury in Plantation, Sunrise, or Downtown Miami

The Miami Chiropractic Clinic for CBD following auto injury.

Many people who have been in a car accident or have experienced trauma may suffer from nerve damage, whiplash, brain injury, concussion, neck or back pain, radiating pain, sleeplessness, insomnia, depression, numbness and tingling, headaches, and more. After extensive research, Dr. Lisa Owen, DC often recommends CBD for patients experiencing these symptoms following an auto injury at her Downtown Miami office.

What is the difference between CBD and marijuana?

In 2018, the federal government removed hemp from the controlled substances list, and several states have passed new laws legalizing marijuana. Are people just looking for a reason to get high, or is there a legitimate reason to include cannabis back into the pharmacopeia? Cannabinoids are not found in hemp seed, but they are present in the flower of the hemp plant.

The hemp plant is different from the marijuana plant in that marijuana has a high THC content, while hemp contains less than 0.3% THC. Both hemp and marijuana contain cannabinoids, but while marijuana remains on the controlled substances list at the federal level, hemp does not.

CBD, as well as other cannabinoids, comes from the hemp plant. Unlike marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive or addictive. Research has shown that THC should not be taken by anyone under the age of 25, as it may interfere with the development of the frontal lobe of the brain and is psychoactive. CBD derived from hemp does not have these effects and is therefore considered safe for children.

The hemp flower contains many cannabinoids and less than 0.3% THC. CBD is not addictive, and studies show that CBD clears from the brain of laboratory animals within a few days, even though its positive effects may last much longer. CBD products typically only test positive on less thorough or less expensive drug screenings. A prescribing doctor can request a more comprehensive drug test if necessary.

Cannabinoids can help prevent addiction to opioids following an accident or injury

States that enacted medical cannabis laws experienced an average annual decrease in overdose rates of over 24%. In Michigan, surveys revealed a 64% decrease in opioid use and an overall increase in quality of life among individuals using cannabinoids for pain. A study of 2,800 pain patients in California found that most strongly agreed cannabinoids reduced their opioid use.

Cannabinoids and pain

The American Medical Association reviewed 28 clinical trials over 67 years and concluded that cannabis therapy was useful for significant pain relief and spasticity reduction, which is relevant for brain and nerve conditions. These findings were supported by high-quality evidence.

In individuals who have experienced brain trauma or stroke resulting in reduced oxygen to the brain, cannabinoids have been shown to decrease the rate of neuron degeneration and increase healthy neuron activity. Cannabinoids also reduce inflammation and histamine, which play major roles in pain and illness, especially following automobile injuries or trauma. CBD has also been shown to be neuroprotective, potentially reducing the risk of complications such as bladder dysfunction following trauma.

Many healthcare professionals are beginning to see the value of introducing cannabinoids soon after head trauma. The National Pain Foundation study found cannabinoids to be more than six times as effective for pain management compared to medications such as Cymbalta, Savella, or Lyrica.

Joint pain – time for a joint?

A study at Maine Medical Center found that among 1,500 chronic pain patients using opioids, the introduction of CBD led to a 76% reduction in opioid use, a 27% reduction in anxiety medications, a 66% reduction in sleep medications, and a 42% reduction in alcohol use. These health issues are commonly experienced by patients following automobile injuries or other trauma. One animal study even found that CBD helped rodents get along better with their cage mates. Can’t beat that.

This is only a small portion of the potential benefits of CBD. Just as painkillers are not an appropriate treatment for a toothache, CBD cannot replace chiropractic care in correcting spinal misalignments caused by trauma. Dr. Owen recommends CBD as a superior option for managing pain in patients recovering from brain trauma, whiplash, or auto injury while the body heals.
