ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC
The chiropractic profession is over 100 years old.
It was “discovered” when a maintenance man, Harvey Lillard, who had fallen and gone deaf as a result, noticed that a bone in his spine was out of place after the injury. D.D. Palmer, a magnetic healer at the time, was able to put the bone back in place, and Harvey Lillard’s hearing was restored. Likewise, our patients in Downtown Miami who are seeking holistic health care often experience many benefits beyond pain relief.
The practice of restoring health by adjusting bones grew into both an art and a science, and it has since become a mainstay of health care. However, bone setting — the practice of adjusting misaligned bones — is actually an ancient profession, practiced for thousands of years in places such as Egypt, India, and China.
CHIROPRACTIC FOR IMMUNE FUNCTION?
Chiropractic care at the turn of the twentieth century was declining. It was revived during the Flu Pandemic of 1918, when patients under chiropractic care survived at a rate of nearly 90 percent, while patients treated allopathically died at a rate of 90 percent. Many of those who survived the pandemic did so with the help of chiropractic adjustments.
CHIROPRACTIC FOR BETTER MENTAL HEALTH
Following this, the chiropractic profession experienced a revival. In 1926, a Chiropractic Mental Institution was even established, known as Clear View Hospital. At the time, the results obtained at Clear View were considered far superior to other options available to mental patients. The governor of the state was a strong advocate, along with others such as Judge Ponath, a circuit judge who refused to commit patients to a traditional mental hospital if they or their families could afford Clear View. He even printed brochures encouraging patients and their families to choose the chiropractic hospital.
Chiropractic care has always centered on the removal of subluxations — an impingement of a nerve caused by the misalignment of bones. Most importantly, chiropractors are concerned about the damage subluxations cause to the spinal cord. However, misalignments of the shoulders, feet, knees, hands, and even the jaw can cause pain and dysfunction, because the brain and spinal cord control everything in the body. This is why doctors often use terms such as neuroendocrine system and neuroimmune system, and why we hear frequent references to the gut-brain connection.
Good posture has always been associated with good health and success. The Journal of the American Medical Association once stated:
“Deviations from the body’s center of gravity (poor posture) have resulted in intestinal problems, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, osteoporosis, hip and foot deformities, poor health, decreased quality of life, and a shortened lifespan.”
Yet many people are still prescribed drugs for these conditions. Improving nerve flow is vital to both mental and physical health. Drug costs remain high, largely because medications rarely treat the root cause.
